In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to block in your competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent's lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don't have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
