In extraordinarily general terms, there are three main tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in your competitor's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious calamity because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your competitor's lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there's no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you don't have other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it's more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
