In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques used. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in your opponent's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent's smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there's no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
